Curriculum Statement

Stowupland High School ensures that a broad and balanced curriculum is provided to its students. This incorporates powerful knowledge across all subjects that will give our students opportunities and maximise their life chances. The curriculum has been designed to ensure that the powerful knowledge creation will be maximised by exposure to a carefully sequenced curriculum in all subjects. When students leave the school they should be healthy, articulate, literate (including computer-literate) and numerate and have lively, enquiring, independent minds.

Students follow a 3 year Key stage 3 ensuring they have experienced the full range of National Curriculum subjects in depth before taking their options at the end of year 9.  Key Stage 4 options also include additional vocational choices such as:  Health and Social Care, BTEC Sport and ICT.  There are also personalised options with outside providers for students with specific requirements.

The curriculum at Stowupland fully supports the aims of the school by:

  • Creating an innovative and personalised curriculum so that all can secure high standards of achievement;
  • Offering a range of activities – curricular and extracurricular – in order to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes essential for life in the 21st century;
  • Providing a caring, happy and safe environment where expectations and responsibilities are clearly understood and readily accepted;
  • Broadening our students’ horizons and nurturing an understanding and appreciation of the interdependence of individuals, groups, communities and nations;
  • Communicating and collaborating to enhance the partnership between school, home and the wider community.
 

The school delivers the curriculum through discrete subject lessons, tutorial and assembly time and through extracurricular activities and opportunities.   All teaching and experiences support the school’s vision of “Outstanding Progress for All” and reflect the equal and symbiotic relationship between academic achievement and personal growth.

The school’s stated values – Rights, Responsibilities and Respect – reflect our democratic society and actively promote the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.  These values permeate curricular and extra-curricular delivery and are evident in the strong and purposeful working relationships across the school.

The school aims to sustain this broad and balanced approach at KS5. The introduction of additional subjects enables the school to create an attractive offer both to students who have studied with us in Year 11 at Stowupland and to others who choose to join our Sixth Form. The focus is on enabling students to study the subjects they choose and which are most appropriate for Higher Education courses at age 18.
