Dance
Powerful Knowledge |
‘Education in the art of dance engages the artistic processes of creating, performing and critical analysis. These processes require students to read symbol systems, use critical thinking skills, excel in nonverbal reasoning and communication, exchange ideas, work cooperatively and collaboratively with others, and interact within a multicultural society. More comprehensively, education in the art of dance develops kinaesthetic and spatial learning as well as intra- and interpersonal knowledge of self and others.’ Dance is an empowering and powerful form of non-verbal communication which enables the development of creative, imaginative, physical, emotional and intellectual capacities. Dance is both physical and expressive – this is what makes it similar to and different from other art forms and physical activities. Dance will encourage you to develop your technical dance skills in a variety of styles. It will also help to improve your knowledge and understanding of dance as a choreographer, performer and as a critic. The course has a focus on choreography that gives you the opportunity to explore your own creative ideas; adapt and refine them to a performance standard. You will study professional dance works both practically and theoretically to broaden your understanding of themes, concepts and stimuli. Students also learn Set phrases that need to be performed with confidence, style and technique. |
Literacy |
To learn Key words of all physical, mental, and technical skills as part of the GCSE curriculum. Students also need to show an understanding of choreographic approaches and ways to develop a motif and be able to explain how each skill is performed. Literacy is embedded through KS4 through extensive reading and preparation of 6 professional Dance works where students are required to learn key facts, choreographic intention, choreographic approaches, stimuli, stage designs, set and props but be able to understand and explain their relevance within the performance. Preparation for a written exam means that students need to be able to structure answers as they attempt 6 and 12 mark questions. Students also need extensive knowledge and understanding to be able to compare and contrast Dance performances whilst demonstrating the skill of being the ‘thinking dancer’ by giving their own interpretations and opinions. KS4 also requires students to read about safe practice in the dance studio and the science behind being a healthy Dancer, for example posture, PLUM lines, nutrition, hydration, effective warmups and stretching. |
School Context |
Students will be able to compare and contrast key features of six professional works from the Dance Anthology. Students need to be able to approach questions with imagination as they answer questions on hypothetical choreography based on a stimulus given to them, making reference to choreographic devices, motif development and dance actions. Confidence, creativity and teamwork are all skills that need to be developed as we complete set phrases, duet/trios, and choreography. |
